I completely agree with your thoughts on 0-3 CAPE being more readily available to web users since it seems to be a critical ingredient in these cold-core/cool season-type events.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on the "veer-back-veer" debate? If I recall correctly, most of the model soundings, as well as the observed soundings from the region (e.g. ILX), for this event showed substantial veer-back-veer wind profiles, yet VBV is commonly thought of as an inhibitor to tornadic supercell development. VBV seemed to play a role (along with other factors) in hampering the supercell/tornado threat in central/southern Oklahoma the previous day yet seemed to have no effect on the Illinois environment on 12-1. I was wondering if there are any certain thresholds or indicators of when VBV will have an adverse effect on a severe weather environment versus no effect at all?

Thanks for listening, and, again, excellent write-up!

Sincerely,
Trey GreenwoodTrey Greenwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13248325880930650958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2399626414603781513.post-34209619873534252822018-12-10T03:01:15.369-08:002018-12-10T03:01:15.369-08:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.mazharhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16391916806832389588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2399626414603781513.post-53254153715151629512018-12-08T17:19:26.192-08:002018-12-08T17:19:26.192-08:00Hi John:

It's not a "magic" parameter by any means, and doesn't address potential limiting factors like weak 0-6 km deep layer shear. high LCL heights, and large near-ground CIN. But I think it is still useful in pointing to areas that probably need to be examined more closely for possible tornado potential. As you pointed out, on Oct 2nd this year the EHI parameter did a pretty good job highlighting the PA area from midday on where most of the stronger tornadoes occurred.

Thanks for your comment! The poorly forecast Pa, NY and Ohio outbreak on October 2 2018 also had relatively high supercell composite and EHI (particulary 0-3km).
